One fine day, just video hopping in YouTube and happened to tumble across a video which listed the top Late Night Restaurants of Bangalore, it immediately caught our attention and at that moment we made a plan to give it a visit right away! It’s called the SHALIMAR RESTAURANT.
We set out at 1AM to Shivajinagar which is in the core of Bangalore. Normally in the mornings it’s busy and bustling with an ecstatic crowd purchasing all myriads of things, from bangles to fruits and vegetables. It was a pleasant trip of about 20 mins and we reached Shivajinagar. It’s quite close to Russell’s Market and there is plenty of parking space near the market at night. We had to look at the time to have a reality check to see if it really was 1:30AM as it didn’t look quite close to midnight with crowds of people stocked into hotels and eateries in the area. There were a lot of people walking around and all restaurants were full, people were waiting outside and all Street food stalls were crowded to the extent, you can’t see what he’s cooking inside.
We made it to the Shalimar Restaurant, it wasn’t much like the other posh restaurants and Bangalore, it was in a ancient looking building. There were various tawas out in the front bubbling with mutton and gravy, and various types of kebabs hanging there waiting to be skewered over the fire.
Kebab is a Middle Eastern main course dish predominantly made out of meat which is famous all over the world for instance it’s called Doner Kebab in the US, chuaan in China, and suya in Africa. It has history dating back to 17th century BC in the Middle East. It’s even mentioned in the Mahabharat.
The cashier sitting near the entrance asked us to sit in the Family Hall on the first floor. We climbed up the narrow fleet of stairs and made our way to our seats, it wasn’t that comfortable but it served it’s purpose. The waiters were really kind and patient and were also helpful in explaining what each dish was as we were new to the place and shooting a YouTube Vlog for our channel. He explained us about all the special items on the menu and asked us to go for Mutton Sheekh Kebab, Iranian Chicken Kebab, and Mutton Brain Pepper Fry. We went for it as usual.
It wasn’t much of a wait and there arrived our food, we were already insanely hungry after walking down the lane seeing all the delicious food and catching the smoky aroma of kebabs. There are other dishes too in the hotel like biriyani, rumali roti, Parotta, and much more but we particular wanted to try the meat there, as its famous all over Bangalore.
We started with the Mutton Sheekh kebab, it was served hot with onion and a green mint chutney. The moment we saw, we knew it’ll be good. We took the first bite and it was heavenly….the juice from the sheekh kebab hit my soul, it was my instant favourite. The meaty taste of the kebab and the perfect blend of spices made the dish the best out of all sheekh kebabs I’ve ever tasted. Took another bite with the mint chutney and onions, it gave a minty tang and crunch to the kebab, the meaty was really soft and chewy at times, it had a nice and spicy after taste.
Then we moved on to the the Iranian Chicken Kebab, it was orange in color, fried in oil and was topped with generous amount of white sesame seeds. We went ahead to take a bite, it was really soft and tender and succulent, the meat was marinated for a long time as it was juicy and the spices and masala were well into the meat giving it a better taste. Even though it was a little oily it was unique, never tasted before and a burst of Iranian flavor in your mouth. This stands second to the Sheekh Kebab, but is definitely recommend!
Next comes the Brain Pepper Fry, brain is not much of my favourite compared to the rest as it was not as exquisite as the others but it was definitely good and worth a buy. The brain was well cooked and was fried and topped with a very generous amout of black pepper. It also had a ton of curry leaves which imparted a wilder and earthy flavour to it. It was insanely soft and was cooked to perfection as it is very easy to overcook it.
With that done, we have completed our late night adventure for kebab, I would totally recommend this place, for the taste as it was outstanding and memorable. The total came to about ₹1100. The cost of food was a little up the balance given the infrastructure and look of the place, but on the brighter side I felt the cost was worth the taste! So when you visit make sure you keep a couple of hundred bucks to make sure you don’t end up calling someone at the middle of the night for extra cash!! But this place is totally recommend and you won’t regret it.
